VAT (Value Added Tax) was first introduced in the UK in 1973, replacing the Purchase Tax system. The current UK default VAT rate is 20% and has been so since 4th January 2011. Some goods or services are subject to a lower VAT rate, typically 5%, and others such as most foods are VAT exempt.
